The Five Best Yoga Poses for Kids

Dolly Bhatia-Frolick is a children’s fitness coach and a registered yoga teacher. She enjoys inspiring and motivating others to aim for balance and optimal health in their daily lives. She suggests the five best yoga poses that kids can do indoors and with little supervision.

Child Pose (Balasana)

How: Sit on floor with knees bent, lean forward with arms stretched out in front or parallel to legs.

Benefits: Calms mind, relieves stress and breather deeper. Releases tension and stretches muscles in lower back, hips, and legs. Helps to rest and rejuvenate.

Warrior Pose (Virabhadrasana)

How: Create a star pose with your body and open chest wide. Take a deep breathe, bend one knee while extending back leg and arms to the side and exhale.

Benefits: Power pose with tremendous strength, stability, balance and focus to stretches hips and shoulders. Relieves back aches, opens chest and lungs and improves circulation and respiration.


Tree Pose (Virkshasana)

How: Take a deep breath, stand tall with chest forward, lift one foot to either pointed toe at ankle, below or above the knee. Make prayer hands and bring arms to heart or raise above head. Practice staying still for deep inhale and exhales.

Benefits: Develops balance, increases concentration, strengthens the legs, thighs, core and posture.


Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)

How: Turn sideways on your mat, lean over to one side, stretch deeper, extend other arm up and look either forward or to the sky.

Benefits: Develops balance and poise, brings harmony, courage and focus. Stretches legs, muscles around the knee, ankle joints, hips, groin muscles, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, chest and spine.


Corpse Pose (Savasana)

How: Lie flat on your back with legs and arms comfortably separated and palms facing up. Close eyes and slowly breathe through nostrils. Focus on your breath travelling up and down in the center of your body.

Benefits: Relaxes the whole body. Release stress, fatigue and tension. Improves concentration and blood circulation. Calms mind and improves mental health.
